What we do

Interventional Radiology is a specialty field in medicine.

In this clinic, you will be able to speak to Interventional Radiologists who perform minimally-invasive surgical procedures using imaging guidance.

The Alfred Interventional Radiology service includes provision for overnight inpatient admission, and our doctors perform may perform your procedure under light sedation. There is also access to general anaesthetic services however if this is the case you may be required to attend a separate pre-anaesthetic assessment prior to your procedure.

You may also meet our Interventional Radiology Nursing Coordinator who will be coordinating your procedure.

• The range of procedures offered is broad and includes, but is not limited to:
• Uterine fibroid embolisation (also known as uterine artery embolisation)
• Varicocoele embolisation
• Embolisation of pelvic venous congestion
• Management of IVC filters including removal of complex filters
• Management of arterio-venous malformations (AVMs)
• Assessment and treatment of vasogenic erectile dysfunction
• Long-term venous access including insertion of venous access ports
• Interventional oncology procedures
  • Trans-arterial chemo embolization (TACE) of liver tumours
  • Radio-frequency or microwave ablation of renal and liver tumours
• Treatment of peripheral vascular disease including angiography, angioplasty and stenting
• Intervention for management of complex pain
• Corticosteroid (cortisone) injections to the joints and spine for pain management
• Diagnostic cerebral angiography
• Intervention of cerebral aneurysms and arterio-venous fistulae (AVFs)
• Superficial and deep organ intervention including biopsy and drain insertion

How to access this clinic

Referral from your GP

You need a referral letter from your GP or medical practitioner to access this service.

Your doctor will need to fax your referral letter to us. We will be in contact with you in clinically recommended times, depending on waiting list length. If there is no waiting list, you will receive an appointment booking letter or we will contact you to arrange a suitable time.

What to bring

Every time you come

• Medicare card
• Health Care Card and/or concession card (if you have one)
• Private health insurance card (if applicable/if you want to use it)
• Adverse drug alert card (if you have one)
• Previous X-ray films, scans, ultrasounds or any other test results or reports
• Medicines you need to take while you are here
• List of medicines you are currently taking (or the boxes), including medicines you have bought without a prescription, such as herbal supplements and vitamins
• Glasses, hearing aid(s) and/or walking frame if needed

For a clinic appointment

• Your appointment letter
• Any special items listed on your letter
• TAC or WorkCover claim number (if relevant)
