Neurology

View patient information

The Alfred Neurology Unit provides a 24 hour emergency general neurology and stroke service.

Clinical service overview

Elective general neurology and video EEG-monitoring patients are admitted Monday to Friday.

The neurophysiology laboratory offers a range of specialised electrophysiology tests to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of neurological conditions.

The tests are performed by a highly experienced and qualified team of scientists, technicians and neurologists.

The tests provided include:

  • Electroencephalography (EEG) measures the electrical activity of the brain
  • Nerve conduction study (NCS) and Electromyography (EMG) tests the electrical activity of peripheral nerves and muscles;
  • Long term video EEG monitoring (VEM): 4 day inpatient monitoring for the diagnosis and characterisation of seizure disorders;
  • Tremor study: electrophysiological testing for movement disorders including tremor and myoclonus;
  • Botulinum toxin injection therapy for movement disorders;
  • Visual evoked potentials (VEP) studies the electrical properties of the visual pathways;
  • Somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP) studies the electrical properties of the peripheral and central nervous systems;
  • Quantitative sensory testing (QST) using the Case IV system determines thermal and vibratory sensory thresholds;
  • Autonomic study tests the sympathetic skin response (SSR) and RR interval variation for assessment of sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system function;
  • Visual field test using the Humphrey visual field tester determines visual field impairment.

Movement Disorders Program

The Movement Disorders Program incorporates the Parkinson's disease and movement disorders outpatient service, dystonia clinic and tremor analysis laboratory.

The team includes three neurologists, the movement disorders fellow, nurse, physiotherapist and several post-graduate students.

The team sees over 1,400 patients each year in the clinic and as inpatients.

Research interests and trials

The clinical team is linked with the clinical and laboratory research team at the Van Cleef Roet Centre for Nervous Disorders, Monash University. We undertake a number of research studies and trials and recruit patients for these. Find out more about our research.

Exclusion criteria

This service does not routinely offer treatment for the following:

  • Patients who are being treated for the same condition at another Victorian public hospital
  • Children under 18 years of age
