Medical Oncology

The Medical Oncology Unit provides a coordinated multidisciplinary comprehensive cancer service and major primary care facility for adult patient with malignancy

Clinical service overview

The Medical Oncology Unit works in conjunction with Palliative Care, as well as Infectious Diseases treating patients with HIV associated malignancies.

We actively support and participate in a number of regular multidisciplinary specialised clinics and meetings within the hospital.

Refer your patient

Fax referral to us

We accept GP and specialist referrals to this service. 

All referrals are triaged by the service according to clinical urgency. Patients requiring immediate assessment should be sent to the Emergency & Trauma Centre. 

To refer your patient, complete and fax a referral to us. For urgent referrals, also contact the service Registrar to discuss the case.

To ensure appropriate and timely triage, include all demographic and clinical details as well as relevant investigation results. 

If you are concerned about any delay of the appointment or if there is any deterioration in your patient’s condition, contact the service Registrar on call on (03) 9076 2000.

Special referral instructions

For urgent referrals, contact the Medical Oncology Registrar during business hours via switchboard on (03) 9076 2000 and fax a comprehensive referral to (03) 9076 2298.

For patients requiring emergency attention, during working hours phone the Medical Oncology Registrar on call through Switchboard on (03) 9076 2000 and/or send to The Alfred Emergency and Trauma Centre.

After hours or on weekends, if the problem cannot wait, contact the Medical Oncology Registrar or Specialist on-call through The Alfred switchboard.
