Haematology

Our comprehensive service includes:

• Non-malignant haematology
• Malignant haematology and stem cell transplantation
• Haemostasis and Thrombosis Clinics
• Haemophilia - The Ronald Sawers Haemophilia Centre is a statewide service and focuses on comprehensive care, providing a wide range of services to adults with bleeding disorders, including support for their families.
• Radiotherapy - our patient centred approach to the delivery of care is further enhanced by an integrated Haematology Oncology Clinic where chemotherapy may be delivered in an ambulatory setting in addition to blood product transfusion, central venous catheter management, growth factor/cytokine administration and other aspects of supportive care.
• Apherisis - providing a comprehensive therapeutic and donor apheresis service for both inpatients and day patients. Procedures performed include plasmapheresis, plateletpheresis, leucopheresis, granulocyte collection, and peripheral blood stem cell collection.
• Transfusion - providing support for a wide range of trauma and surgical procedures in close liaison with the Australian Red Cross Blood Service.

In addition we provide a consultative service to other specialties within The Alfred and to community based private practitioners.

These services enable us to effectively deliver both inpatient and outpatient care for blood disorders such as:

• acute and chronic leukaemia
• myelodysplastic and myeloproliferative disorders
• lymphoma
• multiple myeloma
