Caring for people over 65 is a specialty at Caulfield Hospital.
Our services
Our expertise in aged care extends to specialties in dementia, falls, continence and bone health (osteoporosis and rheumatology). With multidisciplinary teams, our aim is to return patients to optimum independence and wellness.
The mental health of patients over 65 is treated and assessed in Caulfield Hospital’s Aged Mental Health Service.
Residential aged care units onsite at Caulfield Hospital are operated by HammondCare.
Caulfield Hospital also runs four inpatient Aged Care wards which provide medical services for people over 65 years, including a ward that specialises in caring for people with dementia or persistent delirium.
Teaching and education
We offer eight accredited Aged Care Registrar training positions spread across Caulfield, The Alfred, Sandringham and Cabrini Hospitals, with rotations through the various aged care inpatient and non-inpatient programs, Aged Psychiatry and Palliative Care.
Caulfield Hospital also hosts one of the Victorian Continence training Fellowships in partnership with Eastern Health (6 month rotations).
Alfred Health participates in the centralised match for Advanced Trainees in Geriatric Medicine in Victoria via the VGMTP/RACP.
Research
Aged Care Services has an active role in research, in particular focusing on clinical research in the older population.
Recent projects include the evaluation of the impact of mobile DEXA scanning in a residential care setting on the diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis and the evaluation of the implementation of an electronic interdisciplinary assessment system in a sub-acute setting.
Advanced Trainee Program
A large focus within the service is the Advanced Trainee Program which involves trainees working closely with consultant geriatricians in developing and implementing a research project.
